KU Leuven is open to the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in education and research and has chosen to use GenAI responsibly.

However, this does not mean that GenAI may be used freely or without limitations. Its use always requires a critical, transparent, and responsible approach, and as a student, you remain fully responsible for everything you submit. Your work must also clearly demonstrate the competencies you have acquired yourself, so that they can be properly assessed.

KU Leuven has developed five key principles for the use of GenAI:

• Respect legal frameworks and valorisation potential

• Take responsibility for your input and output

• Be critical

• Be transparent about your use

• Choose the right tool for the right task

Code of Conduct and Transparancy Declaration concerning GenAI use

1. The Code of Conduct clarifies what is and is not permitted and how you can use GenAI responsibly, in accordance with the university’s principles of academic integrity.
   Consult the Code of Conduct here. If you have any questions or doubts about the use of GenAI, please contact the lecturer of the course concerned or the faculty contact person.

2. Every student must complete a Transparency Declaration* when submitting an assignment or thesis, in accordance with the guidelines set out in the Code of Conduct. In this statement, you indicate whether and how you used GenAI in preparing your work. Download the transparency statement here.

*Please note: If you, as a student, misuse GenAI and are not transparent about its use, this may be considered an irregularity. (see Article 84 of the Education and Examination Regulations)
